OpenAI's latest pivot? Or is it? Is your next browser going to listen to every tab?

OpenAI has launched a new web browser called ChatGPT Atlas. As a Canadian I am overly concerned about this announcement.

For many years we've happily given away our data and private information to U.S. big tech - without much question.

On the surface, it promises convenience by letting you “chat with the web,” summarize pages, and even automate tasks like bookings and online research through agent mode.

But this move raises serious questions.

By owning the browser, OpenAI positions itself as the gateway to your entire online experience, giving it access to far more user data than before: browsing habits, personal interests, purchasing behavior, and long-term patterns.

Even though they claim to offer privacy controls, this still centralizes enormous power and data inside one company whose business model depends on training AI with user data. A browser like this could reshape the web itself. If people rely on AI summaries instead of visiting websites, will independent creators lose traffic and visibility?

Will the open web be replaced by AI-controlled walled gardens that decide what information we see? And what happens when we allow autonomous AI “agents” to take actions on our behalf online, who is responsible when things go wrong?

Innovation is welcome, but let’s be honest: this isn’t just about convenience. This is about data extraction, ecosystem control, and redefining how people access information. If browsers become AI-driven behavioral data funnels, the last layer of neutral web infrastructure disappears. The question isn’t just “Will you try Atlas?” It’s “Do we really want an AI company mediating everything we do online?”

The browser wars have been going on a long time. And it has always been over data access. Google was almost forced to sell off its stake in Chrome. One that I think should have happened. Organizations like Mozilla have all but lost the war to the tech giants. Browsers like Brave get zero attention now. I think we're in uncharted territory now @Jess.

The ChatGPT Browser is essentially looking to take over the role of using the internet from Humans and giving it to AI Agents. This is interesting in one sense all those tasks like checking your email can now be done by an AI. But then on the other side all those tasks are now being done by AI. So remove the Human and what do you have left, really?

As for what it means for Canadian data. Our leaders are asleep at the wheel it seems. I'm hoping we see some forward progress but I think the industry is moving to fast for the people at the helm. We need private operators like CanXP at the table that have their finger on the pulse.

I have tried the Atlas browser and I can not understand why they think this is a good user experience. I guess it's fun for people that like watching other people work ;) but for us power users it is sooooooooooo frustrating
