It would be nice to be able to @ people in order to notify them. Obviously users should be able to turn notifications off in case they don't want to be notified.

This is on our roadmap, very much agree. For all future feature requests please label your threat under Feature Requests as I'll mostly be monitoring that label to ensure all requests migrate to our PDLC.
